Green Roof at A3C Architects in Ann Arbor
I am working with a local business owner who is interested in installing a green roof. Is there anyone in Metro Detroit that you would recommend for this project? If not, is there someone from elsewhere you would recommend?
– Deb
Hi Deb,
There’ve only been a handful of greenroof projects in SE Michigan, with many more around the state — particularly on the west side. A variety of professionals may be involved in such a process, from designers, to installers to plant growers. The only local designer I’m familiar with who has experience with green roofs is A3C Collaborative Architecture in Ann Arbor.
I’d also recommend you go to the greenroofs database and search for Michigan installations. Each project lists who was involved in making it happen. For example, you can see the information on the Ford Rouge Plant, University of Michigan, Mallet Creek Public Library, and others.

How can the business environment be improved in Detroit? What needs to happen to make it easier to start and grow businesses in the city? What is the future of small business development in Detroit?
Detroit is undergoing a complete review and planning process to make it economically and fiscally sustainable for the future. The Detroit Works Project first focused on the neighborhoods and now it’s beginning its review of the city’s business environment. This Summit is the beginning of the conversation and the opportunity for the small business community to share its thoughts and solutions to making Detroit “open for business”.

The recent devastating spree of tornadoes that swept the Southeast might seem like another indicator of the unstable weather patterns that indicate that climate change is upon us. While we are indeed seeing other indications of climate change starting to occur, this doesn’t appear to be one of them. This is heralded as the worst collection of tornadoes striking since the 70s. And that’s means its a genuinely uncommon weather phenomenon. But weather is likely that. It has wide variability. Climate change means that the overall patterns of weather variability is changing. What we watch for now is if another similarly extreme set of tornadoes strikes again in the next decade. If THAT happens, then it starts to suggest a change in overall weather patterns that might be a climate change indicator.

On April 15th, students in WARM’s Detroit Youth Energy Squad (D-YES) stood alongside 10,000 youth gathered from around the country to voice their support for clean energy initiatives at the 2011 Power Shift conference in Washington, D.C. During the conference, D-YES crew member Miah Ward attended a meeting with President Obama to discuss current energy policies with the President. Students also led a workshop titled “The First Green Steps: Engaging People in Disadvantaged Communities.” All 19 D-YES crew members played a direct role in teaching over 100 attendees about low-cost and no-cost ways to save energy.
D-YES is an innovative program that trains high school students and AmeriCorps members between the ages of 16 and 24 to help low-income households reduce their energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. D-Yes is supported by funding from the Erb Family Foundation, the Michigan Public Service Commission, the National Audubon Society, and AmeriCorps.
